Week 3 of the sermon series: “The Effective Life’
“add to your faith” –we are to work our our faith in Christ by supplying a generous helping of goodness
In 2 Peter 1:3-5, Peter uses the word “goodness” twice. In verse 3, Peter told us that God has “called us by his own glory and goodness” and in verse 5 we are to “make every effort to add to your faith goodness.” In other words, we are called by goodness, and we are called to goodness.
True goodness is born of faith.
Faith creates goodness and sustains it.
John 8:28–Jesus aimed to please God and He did. On 2 separate occasions, God the Father was pleased with Jesus’ life and ministry: His baptism and the mount of Transfiguration.
But how do we please God? In Ephesians 4:17-24, Paul focused on removing God-displeasing habits and putting on those habits that reflect God’s character.
- Know the old Life which you cam from. (Ephesians 4:17-19).
- Paul notes 3 stages of descent into the darkness of the old life:
- Wrong Mindset (vs 17-18a)
- Hard Heart (vs 18b)
- Permissive Lifestyle (vs 19)
- Paul notes 3 stages of descent into the darkness of the old life:
- Don’t underestimate the Grip of the old Life (Ephesians 4:20-22)
- Practice the Principle of Replacement (Ephesians 4:22-24)
- Keep in Mind God’s Intent for you. (Ephesians 4:24). God’s intent is for you to reflect His image.
TRUTH: We are called by goodness and called to goodness.
