Week 1: Jesus & Mel

Theme of Hebrews all along is that Jesus is better than...

Hebrews in one sentence: Jesus is better than the entire system of the Old Testament.

Hebrews 7:1-10, 23-25

5 things that I hope we’ll prepare our hearts for the remembrance of the cross, but also prepare our hearts for the resurrection celebration of Christ.

  1. JESUS IS ABLE TO SAVE US COMPLETELY. When Jesus saves us, He is able to save us from all of our sin. He is able to make us completely new people. We’re not partially saved; we’re not mostly saved. We’re completely saved. We’re fully saved from the wrath of God, from the penalty of our sin, from a Christ-less Eternity, but also fully saved to live a life in freedom. Fully saved to live a life in the Spirit, to live a life in joy, to live a new life in Christ. And if you’re a Christ-follower you should rejoice that when Jesus saved you, He saved you completely, permanently, and forever. If you’re not in Christ. This is great news. This is a great opportunity today. You can believe upon Jesus and he can save you completely.
  2. ONLY JESUS CAN SAVE. There’s only one way. If you ever have a hope of having a relationship with God, it is only going to be through Jesus Christ. If you’re looking for any other way to get close to God, there is no other way. Only Jesus saves. The only way to be saved is through Jesus Christ. He’s the only mediator between God and man. It is Jesus who is both king and priest, and He alone can save.
  3. WE COME TO GOD THROUGH JESUS. What does it mean to be a Christian? It means that we have drawn near to God through Christ. The greatest need in the heart of every human in the world is to be loved and to be known. This is what salvation is, is to draw near to God in a relationship. And the only way to draw near to God, to experience that is through Jesus Christ.
  4. JESUS IS FOR YOU. Jesus is ever ready to help you. Ever ready to strengthen you. Jesus is ever ready to encourage you and your heart is broken. He lives to pray for us. Romans 8:33-34. In other words, God has already declared you righteous so those charges, even if they’re true, they do not stick. This great king, this great priest— Jesus Christ is living right now to pray for you, to intercede for you. Jesus is praying a perfect prayer for you. And that prayer He’s praying for you, it always lines up with the will of God.
  5. GENESIS 14:17-20. JESUS, THE KING AND PRIEST, SERVES HIS LIFE TO US. Melchizedek, the king & priest, brought out bread and wine. And he blessed Abraham. Why? The Superior is blessing the inferior. Jesus, our King, our Priest came to serve us. The lesson of the Lord’s Supper is the bread and wine. The bread represents Jesus’ body that was broken for us.
