Series: He Took My Place Week 1: Betrayed for Me
Matthew 26:6–25
2 things to notice: (1) Judas represents all of us & (2) why Judas betrayed Jesus—& how we still do it for the same reasons.
Judas may do it spectacularly, but they all will do it eventually.
Judas’s betrayal is presented as a question: What is YOUR price? Maybe you’re willing to follow Jesus when it is convenient, but at what point do you stop? Your commitment to Jesus stops at inconvenience…. Whatever it is, that’s your price. That’s where your commitment to Jesus stops & you sell him out.
The Bible teaches us that the reason some of us turn out better than others has more to do with grace God has put in our lives than it does some inherent goodness in us. EPHESIANS 2:8-9. We’re not saved because of how committed we are to Jesus, but because of how committed He was to us.
Why did Judas betray Jesus?
(1) Judas wanted a Messiah who would punish evil & reward the righteous. Luke 4:18–19; Luke 4:22; Luke 4:25-27; Luke 4:28-30. Jesus’s message: all of us, at our very best, fall far short, & need a Savior.
(2) Judas wanted a Messiah who would bestow power & riches.
The difference between Mary & Judas. Judas thought of Jesus as useful; Mary thought of Him as beautiful. How you respond to suffering & pain is the measure of your understanding & embrace of the gospel.
Judas represents a “religious” approach to God. Mary understood the Gospel.
The verdict on Judas is devastating—Matthew 26:24.
