Series: Chosen to Be Set Apart: Real Life Holiness

Week 1: Chosen to Be Set Apart

HOLINESS BEGINS WITH IDENTITY, NOT BEHAVIOR.

1 Peter 1:1–12

  1. Exiles by Location, Elect by Identity (1 Peter 1:1–2)
  • “Chosen… sanctified… sprinkled” — identity rooted in the Trinity.

Holiness starts with who God says you are.

  1. A Living Hope in a Dying World (1 Peter 1:3–5)
  • This assurance (Hope) is given in a 3-fold way:
    • The inheritance is “kept” (or reserved) in heaven for the Christian.
    • The Christian is constantly guarded “shielded” here & now until the entering heaven.
    • The Christian is assured that he will be present at the great unveiling (“revealing”) when all the glories of salvation will be disclosed.

Holiness is fueled by hope, not fear.

  1. Trials Refine; Not Define (1 Peter 1:6–7)
  • Suffering is temporary but purposeful.
  • Faith is refined like gold — holiness grows in hardship.

Holiness is forged in the fire of tested faith.

  1. Joy in the Unseen Christ (1 Peter 1:8–12)
  • A holy life is a relationship that flows from loving Christ.
  • Christ-followers are to treasure what God has done for them & live in response to it.

Holiness is rooted in worship, not willpower.

Application:

  1. Declare your identity daily: “I am chosen, set apart, & secure.”
  2. Shift your hope from circumstances to Christ.
  3. See trials as refining tools, not punishments.
  4. Worship intentionally — holiness grows where worship flows.
