Series: He Took My Place Week 2: Taken for Me
Matthew 26:31-47
Jesus doesn’t appear to be going to His death with the defiance & boldness that we might expect. So, what has happened?
“Sorrowful”—horrified, especially when coupled with “troubled.” (26:38).
Somehow, in that one moment,t Jesus glimpsed an eternity in hell for us.
The essence of hell is: Complete abandonment by God.
Jesus got a sudden but overwhelming glimpse of the wrath of God!
This passage shows you the incredible love that Jesus had for you and the terrible judgment that awaits you if you reject Him.
2 things Peter doesn’t understand…
(1) His own condition: Peter doesn’t understand the gospel of substitution because he still believes in a gospel of self-salvation. “Jesus didn’t just die for you; He died instead of you!”
(2) Kingdom Power. The way to really change the world is by serving people, not by conquering them.
True salvation is not something we can achieve, but something we must receive.
