Series: Who Told You That? and the Lies We Believe
Week 1: The Anatomy of a Lie
Genesis 3:1–7
- THE LIE ALWAYS BEGINS WITH A QUESTION THAT ISN’T A QUESTION— Genesis 3:1
“Crafty” — Hebrew: ‘arum
The first step toward sin is always the suspicion that God is not who He says He is.
- THE LIE ALWAYS REDEFINES REALITY— Genesis 3:4
The Serpent’s Strategy:
- Minimize the consequences (“You won’t die.”)
- Magnify the benefits (“You’ll be like God.”)
- Manipulate the truth (Mix truth with deception)
Satan doesn’t need you to reject God—just to reinterpret Him.
- THE LIE ALWAYS APPEALS TO WHAT WE ALREADY WANT— Genesis 3:6
The Threefold Temptation:
- Fulfillment — “good for food”
- Beauty — “pleasing to the eye”
- Enlightenment — “desirable for gaining wisdom”
The lie works because it promises good things in the wrong way.
- THE LIE ALWAYS LEADS TO SHAME, HIDING, AND EXILE— Genesis 3:7
The Immediate Results
- Shame — “they realized they were naked”
- Self‑protection — “they sewed fig leaves”
- Hiding — “they hid from the Lord God”
- Exile — “He drove them out of the garden”
Sin always takes you farther than you wanted to go & costs more than you wanted to pay.
- THE LIE ALWAYS MASQUERADES AS TRUTH— Colossians 2:4.
The devil’s best lies are the ones that feel like your own thoughts.
- THE LIE ALWAYS FALLS APART IN THE LIGHT OF GOD’S TRUTH.
To Break the Power of the Lie:
(1) Name the lie.
(2) Replace it with truth.
(3) Remember God’s character.
(4) Run to Jesus.
The truth doesn’t just expose the lie—it heals the damage the lie caused.
The Lie:
- Fulfillment — “You’ll feel better.”
- Beauty — “You’ll look better.”
- Enlightenment — “You’ll know better.”
The truth:
- Fulfillment is found in Christ.
- Beauty is restored by grace.
- Wisdom is given by the Spirit.
