Series: Seeking Our Future Week 3: Rhythm & Responsibility
Deuteronomy 6:1-12
Principle 4: Create a Rhythm.
The issue is not how we get more, but how do we become more intentional about what we have.
Parents determine what’s normal by the rhythm they establish in their homes.
Moses was aware that their current existence would not be their future reality.
Moses knew that families would have to be…
- … more conscious about creating a rhythm that transferred an everyday faith.
- … more deliberate about establishing visual reminders of God’s power and presence.
- … more innovative about how and when they told God’s story.
What was instinctive in its past had to become more intentional in its new reality.
Deuteronomy 6:6-9.
What happens in your home is more important than what happens in church.
Rhythm requires 2 primary components—intentionality & constancy.
Moses emphasizes 2 important things. First, there has to be an effort to communicate what is core and important. Second, the effort should happen repeatedly and establish a pattern over time.
Mathew 22:35-40. 3 issues in this passage that can help us to prioritize what we discuss in our families:
Love the Lord your God … Wonder –You want your children to become people who pursue a relationship with God.
Love your neighbor … Passion—You want your children to become people who love others the way God does.
… as yourself. Discovery—You want your children to become people who see themselves the way God sees them.
Principle 5: Make it Personal. Deuteronomy 6:6
If you want it to be in them, it needs to be in you.
Whatever you want your children to become, you should honestly strive to become as well. Deuteronomy 6:7. The basic principle is—it has to be in you before it can be in them. He was saying that these truths need to be “on your hearts.”
Realize that your relationship with God will become more passionate as you become more passionate about how you connect with Him.
The mission of the family is not ultimately to protect or provide for your children, but to mobilize them to demonstrate God’s love to a broken world.
